| 2018 || {{Dts|29 February}} || Cybercrime || GitHub suffers and survives a record 1.35-terabit-per-second denial of service attack, which is considered to be the world's largest distributed denial of service attack to date. During the assault, the popular code sharing website's admins notice thousands of systems and devices slamming GitHub's web server. It would later be explained that the attackers hijacked something called “memcaching” — a distributed memory system known for high-performance and demand — to massively amplify the traffic volumes that were being fired at GitHub, resulting in a huge influx of traffic.<ref>{{cite web |last1=Russell |first1=Jon |title=The world’s largest DDoS attack took GitHub offline for fewer than 10 minutes |url=https://techcrunch.com/2018/03/02/the-worlds-largest-ddos-attack-took-github-offline-for-less-than-tens-minutes/ |website=techcrunch.com |accessdate=30 April 2019}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=GitHub just suffered the world’s biggest DDoS attack—and barely blinked |url=https://www.technologyreview.com/f/610405/github-just-suffered-the-worlds-biggest-ddos-attack-it-barely-blinked/ |website=technologyreview.com |accessdate=30 April 2019}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |last1=Howell O'Neill |first1=Patrick |title=GitHub hit with record 1.35-Tbps denial of service attack, more attacks expected |url=https://www.cyberscoop.com/github-denial-of-service-amplification-attack/ |website=cyberscoop.com |accessdate=30 April 2019}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |last1=Thomson |first1=Iain |title=Gits club GitHub code tub with record-breaking 1.35Tbps DDoS drub |url=https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/03/01/github_ddos_biggest_ever/ |website=theregister.co.uk |accessdate=30 April 2019}}</ref>
