2002 Dean Karlan proposes the idea behind Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) to his graduate advisors Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo, and Sendhil Mullainathan at MIT.[1]
2003 June 14 Domain The domain poverty-action.org is registered.[2]
2003 September 12 Domain The domain povertyactionlab.org of the sister organization, the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab at MIT, is registered.[3] This also matches the approximate founding date for the Poverty Action Lab.[1]
2003 December 23 The earliest Internet Archive Wayback Machine snapshot of the IPA website is available for this date.[4]
2003 The first Form 990 of the Innovations for Poverty Action is filed for this year. The filing date is May 11, 2004, and the stamped date of receipt is August 11, 2004. The address as of this time is in Princeton, New Jersey, at what appears to be Dean Karlan's home.[5][6][1]
2006 The Innovations for Poverty Action moves office from Princeton, New Jersey to New Haven, Connecticut. The exact date of the move is not known; the approximate time is inferred from the fact that the Form 990 for 2005 (filed in 2006) has a Princeton address and the Form 990 for 2006 (filed in 2007) has a New Haven address.[7][8][6] Also, the Wayback Machine snapshot for October 13, 2006 shows a New Haven address; however, no earlier snapshots are available for 2006 so we cannot narrow the date down further.[9]
2009 The earliest Annual Report available on the IPA website (and the first ever, assuming the website is comprehensive) is published for this year.[10][6]
2011 The earliest Audited Financials available on the IPA website (and the first ever, assuming the website is comprehensive) are published for this year. The audit also covers financials for 2010.[11][6]
2011 IPA begins testing a teaching assistant model in Ghana through a randomized evaluation in 500 schools across 42 districts, before scaling the program nationally. The model is an adaptation of the Pratham program in India, and adapted to the Ghanaian context after IPA introduced Ghanaian policymakers to the people who manage the Indian program.[12]
2011 November Recognition Charity evaluator GiveWell publishes a review of IPA[13] and lists it among six standout organizations[14] along with GiveDirectly, KIPP (Houston branch), Nyaya Health, Pratham, and Small Enterprise Foundation but below the two top-rated charities Against Malaria Foundation and Schistosomiasis Control Initiative.[15]
2012 May Good Ventures makes a US$50,000 grant to Innovations for Poverty Action to "support IPA’s efforts to research what works in developing world aid and advocate for the use of evidence in decision-making". This is part of a set of similarly sized grants to a number of "standout charities" identified by charity evaluator GiveWell, that works closely with Good Ventures.[16]
2012 May 12 IPA, together with the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) and the Ghana Education Service (GES), bring together 174 researchers and education decisionmakers from across Africa to hear evidence on demonstrated approaches to improving education outcomes.[12]
2012 IPA forms the Quipu Commission in Peru with the plan to generate innovative proposals and empirical evidence that the Peruvian government can use to answer key policy questions and design and implement better public policies. In cooperation with the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), Peru’s Ministry of Economics and Finance (MEF), and the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (MIDIS), the Quipu Commission convenes government representatives and development researchers.[17]
2013 Program IPA launches a new evaluation to test whether pairing rainfall-index insurance with agricultural inputs, such as enhanced seeds or agricultural extension training, increases profits for smallholder farmers in Northern Ghana.[17]
2013 August 23 IPA announces launch of new organization called Evidence Action, created with IPA's support and aimed at taking cost-effective programs to scale to improve the lives of millions in Africa and Asia.[18]
2017 IPA, along with the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab, receive a US$16 million grant from the United Kingdom Department for International Development to research policies that promote peace and support communities in areas recovering from conflict.[19]
2018 April 2 Grant the UK Department for International Development awards the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) a joint grant of US $16 million to research policies that focus on good governance and tackling violent crime.[20]
