| 1868–1947 || British India || After a voyage to {{w|England}} and having discovered significant opportunities for Indian participation in a British-dominated textiles industry<ref name="India as a Model for Global Development"/>, {{w|Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata}} funds Tata as a private trading company. The firm enters the textile business in the first years. In 1898, Hotel Taj in {{w|Mumbai}} becomes the first hotel of such standard in India, and lays the foundation of [[w:Taj Hotels|Taj Group]] of hotels.
