The firm enters the textile business in the first years achieving great success. However, business diversification begins already in the 19th century. In 1898, Hotel Taj in {{w|Mumbai}} becomes the first hotel of such standard in India, and lays the foundation of [[w:Taj Hotels|Taj Group]] of hotels.
