1887 A one-room laboratory is created within the Marine Hospital Service (MHS), predecessor agency to the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS). This would trace the roots of the National Institutes of Health.[1]
1930 The United States Congress renames the Hygienic Laboratory the National Institute (singular) of Health and authorizes the payout of fellowship money for basic research.
