* Timeline of waste management (Expansion started on February 4, 2020):
+
Other (not requested)
** There is a duplicate row for the founding of Clean Harbors -- fix that!✔

** California Electronic Waste Recycling Act has no explanation -- fix that!✔

** The current big picture mixes multiple levels of granularity -- maybe separate into highlights by century and highlights by decade? Similar to what I did for timeline of AI safety.✔

** Sebastian: Add from List of waste disposal incidents✔, Garbage disposal unit.✔

* Timeline of OpenAI (started February 23, 2020) (Sebastian: Feel free to ask more for compensation of unmet items) (tentative payment accepted)

** For the staff changes, I also suggest labeling all these rows "Team"✔ instead of "Staff" so that they fit well for both staff and board changes. (Please also update the guidance in the sample questions section accordingly). Also, please keep only those rows for which there is more context or information beyond just a person joining or leaving. And include more details on why and how it's significant, in the timeline row itself. By the way, it is better to point readers to Org Watch for a complete, systematic list of who joined when.✔

** Similarly, for research papers, please include only the ones for which something more can be said beyond just the fact of publication, including how other people received the paper or how it shaped the field. And include that additional information in the timeline.✔ (Sebastian: I included those where OpenAi explains or introduces a new system, toolkit or product.)

** Maybe add a column on the subfield or domain, so that rows, especially rows about research papers, can be labeled by the subfield. This will make sorting and classification easier.✔

** Maybe include this as an example of OpenAI influencing others not to release their models (either as a separate row, or in one of the OpenAI GPT-2 rows).✔

* Timeline of influenza: Expand to include more comprehensive coverage of flu epidemics and pandemics, and in general cover more events. Interest in influenza (and in pandemics in general) is increasing in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
+
* New timeline: Timeline of infection control; this timeline should cover ideas in infection control like qurantines, cordon sanitaire, social distancing, contact tracing, hand washing, etc. There will be some overlap with timeline of epidemiology but it will be much more focused on the practical steps involved with infection control, using pandemics and epidemics as illustrative cases for how good the practice is at any given time.

Suggested time-sensitive content
* Timeline of experiment design
+
With time-sensitive content, the idea may be to add a few additional important recent events to a timeline, without doing a systematic expansion. So, there may be holes in coverage. The "focused coverage period" banner on top can help to clarify the situation.
* Timeline of poverty studies

* Timeline of Hindi on the web

* Timeline of Delhi metro

* Timeline of Nokia (expand)

* Timeline of Tesla Motors (expand)

* Timeline of Google Search (expand)

* Timeline of cognitive behavioral therapy (expand)

* Speculative timeline of future disease eradications

* Timeline of calorie restriction

* Timeline of smoking and disease

* Timeline of chemotherapy

 +
For instance, let's say you last expanded a timeline in March 2019, and it covers content till March 2019. You want to add a couple of significant events in 2020. You can do so, and keep the focused coverage period as March 2019. So readers get the information that the coverage after March 2019 will be only partial, and less complete than coverage until March 2019.

 +
In some cases you may decide to do a more complete expansion while adding time-sensitive content, but this should be done only if time and mood permit.
 +

* Timeline of online food delivery (one of the most viewed timelines):
 +
** COVID-19 has probably boosted online food delivery a lot? This may deserve a mention.✔
 +
** DoorDash IPO (filed for one on November 13, IPO date still unclear)✘
 +
*** Sebastian: It filed confidentially on February 27, 2020, but maybe we should wait until it becomes effective, as it remains private as of date.
 +
*** Sebastian: let me further expand

 +
* Timeline of Salesforce and timeline of Slack: Add the definitive agreement by Salesforce to acquire Slack! (requested December 7, 2020)✔ (Sebastian: let me further expand)
 +
* Timeline of GiveWell: Add 2020 top charities (requested December 7, 2020); btw, I (Vipul) am okay with doing a more complete incremental expansion which might only include a couple of additional rows, but just adding top charities is fine.
 +
* Timeline of brain preservation: Add Hope Frozen Netflix documentary and its inspiring event.

* Timeline of GiveWell (Expansion started on December 2, 2019) (Sebastian: Feel free to ask more for compensation of unmet items)
+
* Timeline of Bing Chat
** Domain names: When talking about the original registration of givewell.org and givewell.com, you should mention that these are different organizations than the GiveWell of this page✔
+
** See Talk:Timeline of Bing Chat#Review by Vipul on 2024-02-10
** compare this and this it looks like GiveWell acquired the givewell.org domain between April 23 and May 25, 2010; I can't pinpoint a more precise date, but it would be worth adding this row even with the imprecise time range✘(both links lead to no information).

** Similarly, see if you can use the Wayback Machine to find out when GiveWell (acquired givewell.com✘) and set it to (redirect to givewell.org✔).

** For the 2019 board membership changes https://www.givewell.org/changes-in-board-membership it would be good to have a single, consolidated row that describes the controversy around the board membership changes, and discussion of it

** For other board membership and staff changes, my suggestion would be to only keep changes for which something more can be said than just the name of the person joining. For instance, if GiveWell did a blog post about the role and filling it in. Or if the person would later do something significant, or would end up staying at GiveWell for a long time period. I also suggest labeling all these rows "Team"✔ instead of "Staff" so that they fit well for both staff and board changes. And include more details on why and how it's significant, in the timeline row itself. By the way, it is better to point readers to Org Watch for a complete, systematic list of who joined when.✔

** For citations, rather than having the citation link in a separate row at the bottom, how about having it at the end of the quote, or at the end of the para before the quote? That will make the page a bit more compact.✔

** For Wikipedia Views, try to get the chart going back further; I know that only "desktop" data will be available before July 2015 but even that could be illustrative.✔

** "GiveWell moves its offices to San Francisco." You should say that this is from New York City✔, and also (talk about reasons✘).

** The Vox citation seems to have a wrong date (December 25, 2018); it was originally published December 1, 2015 but is updated every few months and the date is updated. It may be better to use the December 1, 2015 date.✔

** Include the very first staff member donations post https://blog.givewell.org/2013/12/12/staff-members-personal-donations/ and mention that it started an annual tradition of such posts.✔

Latest revision as of 21:38, 27 March 2024

This is Sebastián Sánchez. I work for Vipul Naik as content creator. See contributions. A diary with notes is being written in User:Sebastian/notes. Promotion of the timelines can be consulted at Timelineswiki promotion. Also check Detail construction for full timeline in timelines, Inclusion criteria for full timeline in timelines, Representativeness of events in timelines, Visual and numerical data in timelines, and Review process for timelines.

Suggested time-sensitive content

With time-sensitive content, the idea may be to add a few additional important recent events to a timeline, without doing a systematic expansion. So, there may be holes in coverage. The "focused coverage period" banner on top can help to clarify the situation.

In some cases you may decide to do a more complete expansion while adding time-sensitive content, but this should be done only if time and mood permit.

  • Timeline of online food delivery (one of the most viewed timelines):
    • COVID-19 has probably boosted online food delivery a lot? This may deserve a mention.✔
    • DoorDash IPO (filed for one on November 13, IPO date still unclear)✘
      • Sebastian: It filed confidentially on February 27, 2020, but maybe we should wait until it becomes effective, as it remains private as of date.
      • Sebastian: let me further expand

  • Timeline of leprosy
  • Timeline of onchocerciasis ("About 21 million people were infected with this parasite in 2017; about 1.2 million of those had vision loss")
  • Timeline of trachoma ("As of 2011, about 21 million people are actively affected by trachoma, with around 2.2 million people being permanently blind or have severe visual impairment from trachoma. An additional 7.3 million people are reported to have trichiasis")

Subwiki projects

Subwiki purpose: "Mostly for in-depth exploration/understanding of specific topics, but still not in any sequence (so people can jump directly to a specific page)". Read this: [31]

  • Build summaries for organelles based on this model [32]
  • A table of plasmodia
