* Timeline of influenza: Expand to include more comprehensive coverage of flu epidemics and pandemics, and in general cover more events. Interest in influenza (and in pandemics in general) is increasing in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
+
* Timeline of Netflix (expansion)
* New timeline: Timeline of infection control; this timeline should cover ideas in infection control like qurantines, cordon sanitaire, social distancing, contact tracing, hand washing, etc. There will be some overlap with timeline of epidemiology but it will be much more focused on the practical steps involved with infection control, using pandemics and epidemics as illustrative cases for how good the practice is at any given time.

*** Pageviews (sufficient in isolation): The timeline has had over 5,000 views since the last significant update on 2018-07-15 (list of all work on the timeline). It therefore clearly qualifies per the heuristic of "at least 1,000 views since the last significant update."
 +
*** Time since last update: The timeline has not been significantly updated for two years, which therefore passes the filter "don't update timelines more frequently than once a year."
 +
*** Qualitative outdatedness: There have been many updates, particularly on the competition front (including the launch of Disney+).
 +
*** Topicality: Netflix has benefited in revenue from COVID-19 stay-at-home, and traffic to the timeline has also increased. It may be worth capturing this interest better.
 +
*** Cannibalization opportunity from Wikipedia: The corresponding timeline on Wikipedia gets over 10,000 pageviews per month, despite being less detailed and not particularly up-to-date either. There is significant upside if we can beat Wikipedia in search engine rankings.

** Vipul: I know that in the past, I had asked to include all Netflix original content in the full timeline. However, given the significant scaling up of original content by Netflix, I think it is better to only keep in the full timeline the original content that was significant in some way (e.g., the first original content, the first original content in some language, all-time top-performing content). Instead, I suggest a separate section that summarizes, by year, the number and possibly a list of original content in that year.

 +
*** Time since last update: The timeline was last updated 2018-06-01, so it is a little over two years old. This passes the minimum threshold of one year, but is not enough to be sufficient for an expansion.

* Timeline of waste management:

* Timeline of infection control: I think this is pretty much ready!
** There is a duplicate row for the founding of Clean Harbors -- fix that!
+
** Vipul: Maybe add some information on when masks first started becoming popular as a means to fight airborne viral illnesses, such as influenza and coronaviruses? I believe SARS 2003 was a starting point, but please check.
** California Electronic Waste Recycling Act has no explanation -- fix that!
+
** Vipul: Also add information on the tipping point of masks becoming a recommendation around the world for COVID-19?
** The current big picture mixes multiple levels of granularity -- maybe separate into highlights by century and highlights by decade? Similar to what I did for timeline of AI safety.
+
** Vipul: Maybe discuss specific physical distance guidelines in social distancing reecommmendations (e.g, 1.5m, 2m, 6ft).
** Sebastian: Add from List of waste disposal incidents, Category:Waste disposal incidents, Garbage disposal unit.
+
** Vipul: Perhaps talk about the idea of "hygiene theater" (Google it) -- a disproportionate focus on cleaning surfaces in the context of COVID-19 that is primarily airborne.
* Timeline of OpenAI (started February 23, 2020)

** For the staff changes, I also suggest labeling all these rows "Team"✔ instead of "Staff" so that they fit well for both staff and board changes. (Please also update the guidance in the sample questions section accordingly). Also, please keep only those rows for which there is more context or information beyond just a person joining or leaving. And include more details on why and how it's significant, in the timeline row itself. By the way, it is better to point readers to Org Watch for a complete, systematic list of who joined when.✔

** Similarly, for research papers, please include only the ones for which something more can be said beyond just the fact of publication, including how other people received the paper or how it shaped the field. And include that additional information in the timeline.

** Maybe add a column on the subfield or domain, so that rows, especially rows about research papers, can be labeled by the subfield. This will make sorting and classification easier.

** Maybe include this as an example of OpenAI influencing others not to release their models (either as a separate row, or in one of the OpenAI GPT-2 rows).✔

* Timeline of GiveWell (Expansion started on 2 December 2019)

** Domain names: When talking about the original registration of givewell.org and givewell.com, you should mention that these are different organizations than the GiveWell of this page✔

** compare this and this it looks like GiveWell acquired the givewell.org domain between April 23 and May 25, 2010; I can't pinpoint a more precise date, but it would be worth adding this row even with the imprecise time range✘(both links lead to no information).

** Similarly, see if you can use the Wayback Machine to find out when GiveWell (acquired givewell.com✘) and set it to (redirect to givewell.org✔). (Sebastian: I asked for help to the GiveWell Community group on Facebook)

** For the 2019 board membership changes https://www.givewell.org/changes-in-board-membership it would be good to have a single, consolidated row that describes the controversy around the board membership changes, and discussion of it

** For other board membership and staff changes, my suggestion would be to only keep changes for which something more can be said than just the name of the person joining. For instance, if GiveWell did a blog post about the role and filling it in. Or if the person would later do something significant, or would end up staying at GiveWell for a long time period. I also suggest labeling all these rows "Team"✔ instead of "Staff" so that they fit well for both staff and board changes. And include more details on why and how it's significant, in the timeline row itself. By the way, it is better to point readers to Org Watch for a complete, systematic list of who joined when.✔

** For citations, rather than having the citation link in a separate row at the bottom, how about having it at the end of the quote, or at the end of the para before the quote? That will make the page a bit more compact.✔

** For Wikipedia Views, try to get the chart going back further; I know that only "desktop" data will be available before July 2015 but even that could be illustrative.✔

** "GiveWell moves its offices to San Francisco." You should say that this is from New York City✔, and also (talk about reasons✘).

** The Vox citation seems to have a wrong date (December 25, 2018); it was originally published December 1, 2015 but is updated every few months and the date is updated. It may be better to use the December 1, 2015 date.✔

** Include the very first staff member donations post https://blog.givewell.org/2013/12/12/staff-members-personal-donations/ and mention that it started an annual tradition of such posts.

Priority work from Vipul

By September 1, 2020

  • Timeline of Netflix (expansion)
    • Vipul's reasons for marking as priority work:
      • Pageviews (sufficient in isolation): The timeline has had over 5,000 views since the last significant update on 2018-07-15 (list of all work on the timeline). It therefore clearly qualifies per the heuristic of "at least 1,000 views since the last significant update."
      • Time since last update: The timeline has not been significantly updated for two years, which therefore passes the filter "don't update timelines more frequently than once a year."
      • Qualitative outdatedness: There have been many updates, particularly on the competition front (including the launch of Disney+).
      • Topicality: Netflix has benefited in revenue from COVID-19 stay-at-home, and traffic to the timeline has also increased. It may be worth capturing this interest better.
      • Cannibalization opportunity from Wikipedia: The corresponding timeline on Wikipedia gets over 10,000 pageviews per month, despite being less detailed and not particularly up-to-date either. There is significant upside if we can beat Wikipedia in search engine rankings.
    • Sebastian: Google Trends and Wikipedia Views.
    • Vipul: I know that in the past, I had asked to include all Netflix original content in the full timeline.

  • Timeline of face masks (new timeline):
    • Vipul's reasons for marking as priority work:
      • Topicality: The role of face masks in combating COVID-19 has received a lot of attention.
      • Existence value: Face masks seem like an important topic to understand, given the role they may play in infection control.

By November 1, 2020

  • Timeline of Amazon.com (expansion)
    • Vipul's reasons for marking this as priority work:
      • Pageviews (sufficient in isolation): The timeline has had over 4,000 pageviews since the last significant update on 2018-04-28.
      • Time since last update: The time since last update will be 2.5 years at the due date for this timeline. This is well above the 1-year minimum.
      • Qualitative outdatedness: There have been many developments at Amazon since the last update to the timeline.
      • Topicality: Interest in the timeline has increased in light of general increased in interest in Amazon due to COVID-19.
      • Cannibalization opportunity from Wikipedia: The corresponding timeline on Wikipedia gets comparable numbers of pageviews, so we have a doubling opportunity by improving search engine ranking.

  • Timeline of artificial intelligence (new timeline)
    • Vipul's reasons for marking this as priority work:
      • Existence value: A good, solid timeline of artificial intelligence will complement the timeline of AI safety by providing a good background of the AI landscape relevant for AI safety.
  • Timeline of robotics (new timeline)
    • Vipul's reasons for marking this as priority work:
      • Existence value: A good, solid timeline of robotics will complement the timeline of AI safety by providing a good background of the AI landscape relevant for AI safety.
  • Timeline of machine learning (expand and possibly revamp the existing content in the timeline as well)
    • Vipul's reasons for marking this as priority work:
      • Existence value: A good, solid timeline of machine learning will complement the timeline of AI safety by providing a good background of the AI landscape relevant for AI safety.
      • Pageviews: The pretty skeletal version of the timeline has had 400 pageviews on Timelines wiki since the launch of Timelines wiki.
