OKLAHOMA 2650 OKLAHOMA Items of Interest on Oklahoma The Panhandle, though originally a partof Texas, was disannexed when Texas en-tered the Union, and for years it belongedto no state or territoiy. From this cir-cumstance came its former name of NoMans Land. In 1890 it was made a partof Oklahoma Territory. ■ In the northwest are four large saltplains, almost perfectly level, covered withsnow-white salt crystals, and containingmany salt springs: these are the Big SaltPlain of the Cimarron River, the LittleSalt Plain, the Salt Creek Plain, and theSalt Fork Plain. Characteristic wild animals are theblack bear, puma, coyote, timber wolf, fox,antelope, squirrel, rabbit and prairie dog. Hawks, tuikey buzzards, wild turkeys,prairie chickens and cjuail are common.
