This upgrade aims to implement a number of Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), to reduce block reward, and to delay Difficulty Bomb (intended to help transition towards proof of stake).[47] As it was supposed to happen at Block number 7,080,000, the fork is postponed due to the discovery of a problem with EIP-1283, which is removed from the list of planned integrations, and the fork is rescheduled to block 7,280,000, and is given a new name: St. Petersburg.[20]

2019 September 24 Mining The mining community expands Ethereum's network capacity by 25% to allow more transactions to be processed on the network per second, helping to keep fees lower. This is achieved by miners driving up the gas limit, causing it to break above 10 million per block, an increase of 25 percent over the previous week.[133]
2019 October 1 Adoption San Francisco-based Ethereum scaling project Skale Raises US$17.1 million to launch its mainnet, which the firm says would be Ethereum’s “best shot” to beat other smart contract platforms. The funding is to be used to seed and stabilize Skale’s proof of stake network and increase its security.[134]

Among its purposes, it aims to optimize the gas cost of certain actions in the Ethereum Virtual Machine, to improve denial-of-service attack resilience, to enable Ethereum and Zcash to interoperate, and to allow contracts to introduce more creative functions.[3][2][139][140][141]
2019 December 12 Notable case American Ethereum developer Virgil Griffith is arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for providing "highly technical information to North Korea, knowing that this information could be used to help North Korea launder money and evade sanctions."[142][143]
2020 January 1 Protocol introduction The Muir Glacier hard fork occurs at block 9,200,000.[3][2][144] It has only one improvement proposal, EIP 2384, which would delay the difficulty bomb (the increasing difficulty level of puzzles in the mining algorithm used to reward miners with Ether on its blockchain) for another 4,000,000 blocks, or approximately 611 days.[145][146][147]
