Wikipedia

The Wikipedia page Microsoft Copilot seems to mostly overlap, but does mention a few things not here:

  • It uses the term "Microsoft Prometheus" that's not mentioned in the timeline here, which might be because it's a more recent term associated with the new Copilot brand (and beyond the focused period of December 2023 for this timeline). Per the earlier suggestion to rename the timeline, it may be worth also mentioning Microsoft Prometheus.✔

ChatGPT

The free version of ChatGPT isn't helpful as its knowledge base is limited till January 2022.

Microsoft Copilot

I decided to use Microsoft Copilot to generate a timeline of Microsoft Copilot. It was successful (as its knowledge base includes more recent information) but it didn't really structure it as a timeline, more as a bunch of facts about Microsoft Copilot. In any case, the timeline here covers most of those facts and more!

General standalone evaluation comments

  • Both the spellings "Sidney" and "Sydney" are used for Bing Chat's original name. Is it possible to figure out what the original name used for? If both names appear to have been used, it's worth highlighting both versions of the name upfront in the big picture. ✔ (Sebastian: I'll stick to "Sydney", which appears in almost all sources)

Line-by-line comments

  • The "Criticism/commentary" lines for February 16 and February 17 seem to be referring to the same thing. Consolidate? Also, it would be good to include the original reference.✔

Partial review by Vipul on 2023-07-01

This is not a full review! I did a quick pass of the timeline.

  • There needs to be significant coverage of the "Sydney"-codenamed testing phase of Bing Chat, that happened prior to the official release of Bing Chat. As of now, it doesn't look like this phase is mentioned anywhere in the timeline page. In particular, the article https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/WkchhorbLsSMbLacZ/ai-1-sydney-and-bing that I had originally recommended when seeking this timeline is still relevant and can help with fleshing out the Sydney phase.✔
  • Consistency: use "Bing Chat" consistently rather than sometimes calling it "BingChat".✔
  • Competition: Maybe add more rows for the launch of stuff such as Google Bard (Bard is mentioned, but not its launch).✔
  • More in terms of criticism/commentary: There's some, but there should be more criticism/commentary, and less of an exclusive focus on the changes/narrative announced by Microsoft (no need to remove any of the existing rows, just expand more of the other stuff). [1]✔, [2]✔, [3]
