This is a timeline of Slack, a cloud-based set of team collaboration tools and services, founded by Stewart Butterfield.[1]

2009 (January) – 2012 (December) Glitch era. Tiny Speck is founded and launches the game, using Slack as an internal tool. Glitch would close in December 2012.
2013 (August) onwards Slack era. After the closure of Glitch, Tiny Speck launches Slack as a real-time collaboration app and platform.
2014 (August) onwards Slack Technologies era. Tiny Speck renames itself to Slack Technologies, Inc. Service collaboration consolidates with major startups such as LinkedIn and Dropbox. By 2015, Slack daily active users growth peaks. In 2017 Slack is declared the best startup of the year at the Crunchies.
2016 and 2017 Facebook and Microsoft launch their own products to compete with Slack. By 2017, Slack gains more than 150 Enterprise Grid customers from renowned businesses, including 21st Century Fox, IBM, Capital One, and Liberty Mutual, etc.[2]
2018 Slack surpasses 8 million users, and over 600 different software are estimated to be integrated with it.[3]
2019 Slack goes public. Daily active users exceed 10 million.[3]

2009 July 9 Prelude Canadian entrepreneur Stewart Butterfield sends a tweet announcing that his new company, Tiny Speck is hiring. [4][5] Tiny Speck is founded as a Canadian software company in Vancouver, British Columbia. The core team is largely drawn from the founders of Ludicorp, the company that created Flickr, an image- and video-hosting website and web services suite.[6] Slack begins as an internal tool used by Tiny Speck, for Glitch, a game in development at the time.[7][8]
2010 February 9 Prelude Tiny Speck raises US$1,500,000 in seed funding from the A-list VC shop Accel Partners.[9]
2010 April 1 Prelude Tiny Speck raises $5 million in Series A funding from Accel Partners and Andreessen Horowitz.[10]
2011 April 11 Prelude Tiny Speck raises US$10.7 million Series B round from Andreessen Horowitz and Accel Partners to spur the full-on push. It is also announced that Glitch would open up to beta testing.[11]
2011 September 27 Prelude Tiny Speck opens Glitch to the public as a 2D browser-based massively multiplayer online game, after it being in development for 23 months. The game launches free to play, with subscription and virtual currency options.[12][13][14][15][16]
2012 December 9 Prelude Glitch closes down after failing to get enough user traction, and then failing to find a buyer for the product. Butterfield announces to be working at finding new jobs for the 30 or so people who were getting laid off.[17][18][19][20]
2013 August 14 Creation In a preview release, Tiny Speck launches Slack as a tool for office collaboration and communication. The software is meant to reduce or eliminate workplace email, and to compete with services like Yammer and Campfire.[21][22][23][24]

2015 January 28 Acquisition Slack announces the acquisition of Screenhero, a collaborative screen sharing app that lets users speak to each other and access each other’s screens for editing and more.[54][55][56][57][58][59][60]
2015 February 12 Userbase Slacks announces 10,000 new daily active users signing up each week, with more than 60,000 teams and 135,000 paid accounts. The company claims it has 500,000 daily active users, having doubled twice in the last two quarters.[61]
2015 March 26 Funding Slack signs a deal with investors to raise up to $160 million in a funding round that valued the company at $2.76 billion. New investors include Institutional Venture Partners, Horizons Ventures, Index Ventures and DST Global.[62]
2015 March 27 Security Slack confirms its central user database was hacked over the course of four days, compromising some number of users' data. In response to the hack, the company fires up two new security features: two factor authentication, and a team-wide password kill switch.[63][64][65][66][67][68]
2015 April 16 Funding Slack raises US$160 million, at a post-money valuation of US$2.8 billion. Slack reports being used daily by 750,000 workers.[69]

2016 November 15 Collaboration Business analytics software company Sisense announces bots for Slack, Skype, Facebook Messenger and Telegram.[94]
2016 December 7 Partnership Slack and Google announce partnership focused on better integrating their services, bringing a number of new features, including deeper integrations with Google services. 2017 January 6 Funding Slack reveals 11 more companies backed through its US$80 million fund, which is dedicated to early-stage investments in companies building apps in Slack. 2017 January 17 Expansion (office) Slack opens a new office in Dublin, where it has had its European headquarters since May 2015. The new office is intended to accommodate the growth of employee headcount in the European customer experience, sales and business operations teams.[106][107]
2017 January 18 Product Slack launches threaded messaging, a tool meant to connect related messages inside a given chatroom.[108][109][110][111]

2017 February 8 Collaboration PayPal launches a bot meant for Slack users to send P2P payments, all while staying within the Slack team messaging app. The service is announced for users in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.[116][117][118][119][120]
2017 February 24 Collaboration Dropbox releases an open-source Slack bot to tackle unauthorized access and other security incidents in the workplace. The so called Securitybot can automatically grab alerts from security monitoring tools and verify incidents with other employers.[121]
2017 April 11 Service Slack launches in-message drop-down menus for apps, a feature to help its users better connect with apps they need at work.[122][123]
2017 April 18 Competition Facebook plans on offering a free version of its Slack competitor Workplace, a collaborative platform run by the company.[124][125][126][127][128][129]

2017 June 13 Collaboration Astro Technology integrates its AI powered email bot (used for cleaning up the user's inbox) with Slack and Alexa. Slack users would be able to configure Astrobot, the startup’s bot, to notify them about important messages.[137][138][139][140][141]
2017 June 15 Funding Slack pursues a US$500 million fundraising round that would value the company at US$5 billion. Tools made by the company are now used daily by five million people, up from four million in October 2016.[142][143][144][145][146]
2017 September 17–18 Funding Slack closes a $250 million funding round led by SoftBank,[147] which values the company at US$5.1 billion.[148][149]
2017 September 22 Outage Many users report difficulty connecting with Slack. Slack confirms that it experienced and resolved a small "connectivity blip".[150]
2017 October 31 Outage Slack goes down at 3:58 PM Pacific Time (22:58 UTC), with users unable to send or receive messages or access Slack history beyond what is already cached on their local client. The outage is resolved in about two hours.[151][152][153]
2018 January 17 Product Slack releases new functionality consisting of private shared channels, with the purpose to make the service more useful for businesses dealing with confidential or classified content.[154][155]
2018 February 28 Competition Google releases Google Hangouts, a service that allows users to message each other privately or in groups, and work collaboratively on projects. Similar to Slack, it also provides other Google products such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar and Cloud Search.[156][157][158]
2018 March 22 Partnership Slack partners with HCM platform Workday, with the purpose to merge their individual expertise to reach employees. The partnership ís expected "to allow employees to request time-off via Slack, allow real-time peer feedback, make looking up coworker info simpler and, eventually, offer customized notifications and simplified Slack channel assignments."[159]
2018 April 12 Product Slack Enterprise Grid adds security, compliance tools, enhancing its scalability and security. The upgrades include tools for auditing and device management, in addition to onboarding features that makes it easier to add new employees to Slack channels.[160]
2018 April 20 Policy Slack updates privacy policy, allowing employers to download and read direct messages sent between co-workers without telling them.[161][162][163]
2018 May 8 Userbase Slack reports 8 million daily active users and 3 million paid users.[164][165][166][167]
2018 May 22 Product Slack introduces Actions, a set of new developer tools, to make it easier to create and finish tasks without leaving. Developers including Asana, Jira, Pocket, and Zendesk have newly integrated “action buttons” letting users perform actions on those services directly from Slack messages.[168][169][170][171]
2018 July 12 Competition Microsoft releases a free version of Microsoft Teams, the company’s Slack competitor. The free version is expected to include support for up to 300 people, with unlimited chat messages and search, whereas Slack’s free version is limited to 10,000 searchable messages, 10 app integrations, 5GB of file storage, no guest accounts, and only 1:1 video chats.[172][173][174][175]
2018 July 17 Acquisition Slack acquires Robots and Pencils’ app Missions, a tool aimed at facilitating users to automate routine processes and tasks in Slack.[176][177][178][179]
2018 July 27 Acquisition Slack acquires from Atlassian workplace chat app HipChat, with plans to shut it down and migrate users to its chat service. It also acquires Atlassian’s Stride, a successor to Hipchat tool.[180][181][182][183]
2018 August 21 Funding Slack announces having raised US$427 million in a Series H round, reaching value at over $7.1 billion. The funding is led by Dragoneer Investment Group and General Atlantic.[184][185][186]
2018 August 30 Product Slack updates its status feature to include an expiration date, allowing users to set certain statuses like commuting, meetings, and vacation to expire after a distinct amount of time.[187][188]
2018 September 24 Acquisition Slack acquires San Francisco-based email management startup Astro Technology, with the purpose to unify chat and email features.[189][190][191]
2018 December 20 User expulsion A number of Slack users related to countries embargoed by the United States have their accounts deactivated and their free access revoked. The ban is reported by Slack to comply with US regulations, which even affects users who have visited nations including Iran and North Korea. Any travel to these countries (and the associated IP address) are found sufficient to flag an account under Slack’s new geolocation update triggering the bans. The company states “Slack complies with the U.S. regulations related to embargoed countries and regions. As such, we prohibit unauthorized Slack use in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria and the Crimea region of Ukraine.”[192][193][194][195] Later, the company would apologize for 'mistakenly' banning visitors to these countries.[196][197]
2019 January 16 Product Slack introduces new logo, and announces redesign of other elements of its website, marketing materials, and "some places in the product" in the coming months to align with the new design.[198][199][200]
2019 January 29 Userbase Slack reports more than 10 million daily active users, up from 8 million in May 2018. At least 85,000 organizations use the service to help employees communicate with each other.[201][202][203]
2019 February 4 Financial Slack announces having confidentially applied with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to list shares publicly, moving the company a step closer to going public.[204][205][206][207]
2019 February 5 Competition Private, open source Slack competitor Mattermost raises US$20 million in Series A Funding for its workplace chat app. As of date, Mattermost is the fastest growing messaging platform for engineering teams at large organizations.[208][209]

2019 March 11 Product Slack releases a dark mode feature in the latest app update for iOS and Android, adding one of the most commonly requested features for any application.[213][214][215][216]
2019 March 14 User expulsion Slack announces removal of 28 accounts with a “clear affiliation with known hate groups.” The announcement comes after leaked Slack messages show members of American neo-Nazi group Identity Evropa organizing meet-ups and plans to distribute fliers promoting their “white racial consciousness” organization in cities across the United States.[217][218][219][220]
2019 March 18 Product Slack introduces enterprise key management (EKM), a feature that allows businesses to better secure sensitive stored data, including messages, files and comments. This new tool enables customers to control their encryption keys in the enterprise version of Slack.[221][222][223][224]
2019 April 26 Financial Slack files to go public via a direct listing, which excludes a traditional IPO, instead allowing existing shareholders to sell their stock to investors.[225][226][227][228]
2019 April 24 Product Slack introduces update allowing customers to connect with other users, even if they don't use the app itself. Users can send a Slack message straight to someone's email. The recipient can then join the Slack conversation, or reply via email.[229][230][231]
2019 June 20 Financial Slack IPO starts trading at US$38.50 per share, giving the company a US$23 billion valuation, well above the expected $16 billion. The company becomes the second large venture capital-backed business to complete a direct listing, instead of an initial public offering. 2019 June 22 Competition Microsoft adds Slack to its list of “prohibited and discouraged technology”, and bans its employees from using the chat app for security reasons, instead encouraging them to to use the Microsoft Teams app.[236][237][238][239]
2019 July 11 Competition Microsoft Teams reports more than 13 million daily users, along with more than 19 million weekly active users. This figure surpasses the more than 10 million people who use Slack daily.[240][241][242][243]
2019 August 6 Product Slack releases a number of updates with the purpose to provide a secure way for businesses to share and collaborate online. Among the updates there's the ability for administrators to require Touch ID or Face ID or to enter a passcode on a mobile device. In addition, administrators can wipe Slack conversations remotely if a user reports a device stolen.[244][245][246][247]
2019 August 14 Product Slack introduces admin workflow automation and announcement channels aimed at larger organizations, facilitating administrators to limit how employees talk to each other with notification channels that form a new kind of Slack chat space. Ability is introduced for administrators to designate any channel to be used for announcements only, a move aimed at minimizing distractions and ensuring that important information is communicated to workers.[248][249][250]
