2006 Holden Karnofsky and Elie Hassenfeld, working at a hedge fund in Connecticut, form an informal group with colleagues to evaluate charities based on data and performance metrics similar to those they use at the fund, and become surprised to find the data often do not exist.
2007 GiveWell is founded by Holden Karnofsky and Elie Hassenfeld.[1]
2007 GiveWell's founders promote the organization on several internet blogs and forums using sockpuppets to ask questions about where to find good information about how to donate and then answering them, recommending GiveWell.[2]
2013 GiveWell moves its offices to San Francisco.Cite error: The opening <ref> tag is malformed or has a bad name
