2006 June 12 Domain The domain name utilitarian-essays.com is registered.[2]
2008 Brian Tomasik's "A Collection of Essays on Utilitarianism" is renamed to "Essays on Reducing Suffering".[1]
2013 July 11 On Facebook, Brian Tomasik begins a poll to name a new organization to research future suffering, which would become FRI.[3]
2013 July Organization The Foundational Research Institute (FRI) is founded. Some of FRI's work discusses risks from artificial intelligence.[4]
2013 August 30 Domain FRI's domain, foundational-research.org, is registered on this day.[5]
2013 October Brian Tomasik leaves Microsoft to focus on research.[6]
2014 April 21 The first snapshot of FRI's website on the Internet Archive is from this day.[7]
2014 September 26 Domain reducing-suffering.org is registered.[8]
2014 November 30 Domain The domain crucialconsiderations.org is registered.[9] It is the domain for one of FRI's blogs, Crucial Considerations.[10]
2015 July 1 Grant The Future of Life Institute's Grant Recommendations for its first round of AI safety grants are publicly announced. The grants would be disbursed on September 1.[11][12][13] One of the grantees is Kaj Sotala, who is at FRI.[14]
2016 September "Reducing Risks of Astronomical Suffering: A Neglected Priority" by David Althaus and Lukas Gloor is published.[15] (This paper seems to already mention s-risks.)
2016 October 6 Luke Muehlhauser of the Open Philanthropy Project has a conversation with Brian Tomasik on which beings are phenomenally conscious, Tomasik's brand of panpsychism, and other related topics. The conversation is part of the Open Philanthropy Project's investigation of moral patienthood.[16]
2017 June Max Daniel introduces s-risks (suffering risks, i.e. risks for astronomical suffering) in a talk at Effective Altruism Global Boston and accompanying notes.[17][18][19][20]
2017 June 19 FRI's new blog launches.[21]
2017 July FRI's page on tranquilism is published.[22]
2017 July 20 Mike Johnson publishes "Why I think the Foundational Research Institute should rethink its approach" on the Effective Altruism Forum. The post argues against FRI's views on consciousness (Type-A materialism).[23]
2017 August 10 "Multiverse-wide Cooperation via Correlated Decision Making" by Caspar Oesterheld is first published.[24]
2018 February 20 "Using surrogate goals to deflect threats" by Tobias Baumann is published.[25]
