Big picture

Time period Development summary More details
1930s–1960s Early period Contract research organizations come to exist in the 1930s.[1] In the 1940s and 1950s, companies like Huntingdon Life Sciences and Charles River Laboratories are founded. They provide either animals for clients to experiment on, or conduct the tests themselves, in a wide range of scientific areas rather than just pharmaceuticals. In the 1960s, increasing regulation of pharmaceutical products is imposed.[2]
1970s–1980s Trend towards outsourcing The pharmaceutical industry adopts outsourcing preclinical safety studies as an integral and essential part of their overall strategy. Major antecedents are thalidomide in the 1960s, which is found to cause the death of children in several countries, and the introduction of Good Laboratory Practice in the 1970s.[3] Quintiles, one of the largest CROs in the world, as well as Parexelis, are founded in 1982.[2]
1990s onwards Explosive growth The 1990s see an explosive growth in the market for CRO services, with proliferation of mergers and acquisitions. Pharmaceuticals and CROs set up trials in Latin America, Eastern Europe, India, and China.[2] Today, outsourcing is an essential element in the strategy of pharmaceutical companies.[3] The trend towards outsourcing of non-core activities grows not just with pharmaceutical companies, but also across the life science industry as a whole, as companies seek to reduce cost and increase focus on their core activities.[4]
2020 onwards COVID-19 pandemic A spike of worldwide interest in contract research organizations is experienced during the pandemic, with the impact on the CRO market expected to be significant due to increased clinical trials on the verge of developing effective therapeutics and vaccines against the SARS-CoV2 virus.[5]
